In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
