The English and Welsh Pitted in the Same Group for RWC 2027 Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales will face off in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major pool stage encounter in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing echoes their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' shock early exit.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

The Irish and Scotland also share a group together, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as underdogs in France, round out that same group.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and world number one South Africa before the final, assuming the South Africans win their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

If the groups play out according to the current global standings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both England and Ireland until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in France.

This edition will feature a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's history.

Although the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six group winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
