New research reveals that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using these treatments must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
